But how seriously should you take the number on the results page? Most quick tests offer no more than a rough indication. To judge whether they can tell you anything beyond that, you need to know how the questions were selected, who your result is being compared with and how accurately that particular short form measures. If a test provides no information about its norms, reliability or margin of error, a result such as \u201cIQ 124\u201d is better treated as a clue than as a precise measurement. A carefully designed test with 16 well-chosen items may be more informative than a longer collection of repetitive or poorly selected puzzles. When psychologists evaluate a test, they also examine question quality, the abilities covered, scoring, norms and the purpose for which a result will be used. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What 10 or 20 answers can tell you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the questions are of comparable quality, a 20-question test has a clear advantage over a 10-question test: it collects more information and will usually produce a more precise score. The <em>Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing<\/em> likewise note that longer tests generally measure more precisely. A short form and a long form should each have their measurement properties established separately, preferably using independent test data. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple test with ten equally weighted questions has only eleven possible raw scores, from 0 to 10. One answer changes the raw percentage by ten points; with 20 questions, the change is five points. Scoring models that account for question difficulty and discrimination can create finer distinctions, but the amount of information remains limited. This is why a short test should report a standard error of measurement or a confidence interval. Without one, a score such as 124 looks more exact than the data justify. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge becomes greater when a test is meant to cover several abilities. If a 10-question test includes number sequences, verbal reasoning, matrices and spatial tasks, only a few questions remain for each area. A lucky guess, a misunderstood instruction or an unusual strength in one task type can then carry a great deal of weight. Psychometricians use the term <em>construct underrepresentation<\/em> when important parts of the ability being assessed are barely represented\u2014or missing altogether. Reliability describes how consistently or reproducibly a score is measured. Validity concerns the evidence supporting a particular interpretation and use of that score. A test may measure one narrow ability very consistently, yet that does not establish that its result can be interpreted as a comprehensive IQ score. Testing standards therefore tie validity to a specific claim and a specific purpose. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An IQ score also requires <strong>norms<\/strong>. The number of correct answers becomes a normed score only when it is compared with a reference group. A test provider should explain who that group represents and how the sample was recruited. People who voluntarily take a test on a website may differ considerably from the wider population, so their results do not automatically form a representative population norm. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A short test can still be well designed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One example is the freely available ICAR Sample Test. Its 16 questions cover letter and number sequences, matrix reasoning, verbal reasoning and three-dimensional rotation. In the development study, the short form achieved an internal consistency of \u03b1 = .81 and a total omega of .83. The 60-question version produced higher values: \u03b1 = .93 and total omega = .94. Alpha and omega are measures of internal consistency: they indicate how well the individual questions work together to produce a dependable overall score. Higher values generally indicate a more reliable measurement. In this study, 16 carefully selected questions already produced useful results, while the longer version measured the overall score more reliably. [2]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bilker and colleagues created an even shorter version of Raven\u2019s Standard Progressive Matrices. They selected nine questions from the 60-item test and used them to predict the full score. In the validation data, the predicted and actual total scores correlated at r = .906 and r = .898. Here, <em>r<\/em> is the correlation coefficient: it describes how closely the short-form and full-test results are related. Values close to 1 indicate a strong relationship. In practice, people who performed well on the short form usually also performed well on the full test, although a high correlation does not guarantee identical scores for every individual. These findings support the quality of this specific short form; they do not apply to any arbitrary set of nine matrix questions. The study also focused on predicting performance on a particular abstract-reasoning test, not on producing a detailed profile of several cognitive abilities. [3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers later developed two separate 15-item Raven short forms for children and adolescents. Predicted scores correlated with the full version at r = .89 among 9- to 12-year-olds and r = .93 among 13- to 16-year-olds. The authors recommended the forms for use as a background variable in developmental research, clearly limiting the recommendation to the age groups and purpose they had studied. [4]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Biobank provides a rather different example. When its unsupervised cognitive tasks were evaluated, correlations between the individual tasks and established comparison tests ranged from r = .22 to r = .83. Four-week test\u2013retest correlations also varied widely, from r = .40 to r = .89. A general factor derived from several tasks performed considerably better, correlating at r = .83. [5]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ten or 20 questions: what is realistic?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><th>Type of test<\/th><th>What you can realistically expect<\/th><\/tr><tr><td>10 fixed questions with no published evidence of test quality<\/td><td>A rough snapshot for curiosity or entertainment. Without validation of the short form and a stated margin of error, the result remains an indication. [1]<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Scientifically developed short form<\/td><td>Useful for the purpose for which it was tested when question selection, norms, reliability and validity have been investigated. Other tests or target groups require their own evidence. [1\u20134]<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Computer-adaptive test<\/td><td>Selects each new question on the basis of earlier answers and can therefore test more efficiently. Content coverage, the algorithm and measurement precision still need to be documented. [1, 6]<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With questions of equal quality, 20 items provide a stronger basis than ten. General standards do not, however, provide a universal number at which a test becomes \u201caccurate\u201d. The required length has to be determined for the particular test using trial data on measurement precision, content coverage and completion time. [1\u20134]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Six signs of a worthwhile quick IQ test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you begin\u2014or at the latest when you receive your result\u2014you should be able to find clear information on the following points. They reflect general testing standards and guidelines for technology-based assessment. [1, 6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scope:<\/strong> The provider should state which cognitive abilities the test covers. A test consisting of only one type of puzzle measures a narrow slice of performance. [1, 2]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Norm sample:<\/strong> The age, composition and source of the comparison data should be described. [1]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evidence for the short form:<\/strong> Measurement properties from a longer original test do not automatically carry over to an abbreviated version. The short form needs to be evaluated in its own right. [1]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Measurement uncertainty:<\/strong> Every test score contains measurement error. A good results report makes that uncertainty visible, especially near important cut-off scores. [1]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scoring method:<\/strong> Adaptive tests can select questions more efficiently, but they require a calibrated item bank and a clearly documented algorithm. [1, 6]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Testing conditions:<\/strong> Distractions, the device, the internet connection and the surrounding environment can all affect an unsupervised session. International guidelines recommend clear instructions about finding a quiet place, meeting the technical requirements and understanding the level of supervision involved. [6]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a provider says nothing about the comparison group, measurement error or how the test was evaluated, there is no sound basis for treating the displayed IQ as exact. Standardised intelligence assessment under controlled conditions belongs in the hands of appropriately qualified psychologists. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a quick IQ test good for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For curiosity, an informal self-check or an initial screening, a short IQ test is often enough. It gives a broad sense of which tasks feel easier or more difficult. Lower measurement precision is less of a concern when nothing important depends on the result and other information is available as well. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick test alone is not sufficient for decisions about educational support, an assessment of giftedness, clinical questions or any other high-stakes classification. In these settings, testing standards require stronger evidence about measurement precision and the reliability of the decision. Close to a cut-off score, measurement error alone may determine which side of the threshold a person appears to fall on. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does the <a href=\"https:\/\/iq-test.org\/en\/iq-test.php\">IQ test<\/a> on IQ-Test.org fit into this picture? Its 47 questions cover several areas, making it considerably more extensive than a quick test with ten or 20 questions. Scores are calculated using data from more than 100,000 completed tests, so the comparison group is large. That number alone does not establish how precise an individual result is. We do not currently report a standard error of measurement or a confidence interval. I treat the result as a guide to how you performed under the conditions of this online test, relative to the underlying comparison group. For a standardised intelligence assessment under controlled conditions, an appropriately qualified psychologist remains the right person to consult. [1, 6, 7]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: question count is only the beginning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten questions will usually provide only a rough estimate. At a comparable level of quality, 20 questions offer a stronger foundation, but they still do not guarantee a dependable individual IQ score. The studied short forms with nine, 15 or 16 items show how effective a brief assessment can be when it has been developed carefully. Their strength lies in the work behind them: question selection, scoring, norms and the intended use were all examined specifically for those forms. [1\u20135]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a test reports an IQ of 124 after ten questions, I would read it as a rough indication. Before drawing any further conclusion, I would look for published information on the norm sample, measurement error and the validation of that exact short form. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions about short IQ tests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What determines how many questions an IQ test needs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The necessary length should be chosen by balancing completion time, content coverage and measurement precision. Longer tests generally provide more precise results, but the number of questions required has to be established from trial data for the particular test and its intended use. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How far can the result of a quick IQ test be off?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no single figure that applies to every test. The possible difference depends on the test and its standard error of measurement. If a provider reports neither a standard error nor a confidence interval, the displayed IQ score cannot be interpreted as a point-precise measurement. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why can a scientific short form be more reliable than a longer online test?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a scientific short form, questions are selected deliberately and the resulting test is evaluated for a defined purpose and target group. A longer test is not automatically better if its questions are repetitive or its comparison data are unsuitable.
